Answer:
You can edit Notification access on a per app basis by through the Notifications preference pane. Go to the Apple menu and select System Preferences, then click on Notifications. Find the problematic apps (numerous are enabled by default) and uncheck the boxes for "Show in Notification Center" and "Badge app icon".
