How Do I Find My Mac Model Identifier?

I need to determine which Mac I have so I can upgrade the memory. Where do I find my Mac Model Identifier?

Finding the Model Identifier (sometimes called Machine Model) is the easiest way to determine which family your Mac belongs to. This information can be particularly useful when upgrading your Mac's memory since the Model Identifier will help you find out which specific type of memory is used in your Mac.

Find Your Model Identifier In Three Steps:

  1. Click on the Apple menu at the top left of your screen and select About This Mac.
  2. Make sure the Overview tab is selected and then click on System Report (OS X Snow Leopard and earlier users should instead click on More Info).
  3. System Profiler will launch. Make sure Hardware is selected on the left side and look for Model Identifier on the right side of the window.
