How Do I Get Rid Of The Gray Progress Bar Under The Apple Logo?

Why is there a gray progress bar each time I startup my Mac and how do I get rid of it?

Answer:

The first step is to back up your Mac since there might be a problem with your hard drive. If this is happening each time you startup, track down your Mac OS X install disc and boot up using it. Open Disk Utility from the install disc and attempt to repair your hard drive. If Disk Utility is unable to repair your hard drive, you will probably have to erase your hard drive to resolve the issue. Again, make sure you have backed up everything before doing this.
