How Do I Pause An App Or Process In OS X?

Question:

Is it possible to pause an app in OS X?

Answer:

Yes, if your computer is feeling bogged down by an app or process you can pause and later resume it. Start by launching the Activity Monitor app (it's located inside Applications > Utilities). Find the app you want to pause and then look for the PID column. Take note of that value and then launch the Terminal app (also located in Applications > Utilities). Type kill -STOP PID where you replace PID with the value found in Activity Monitor. Then hit enter. To resume the app simply type kill -CONT PID, again replacing the PID with the value found in Activity Monitor.
