Answer:

Yes, you can remove Tags from your Finder window sidebar in OS X Mavericks. Go to your Finder and select Finder > Preferences (or Command+Comma). Click on Tags in the Finder Preferences window and then uncheck each tag (you may have to double-click to completely uncheck them). Then click on Sidebar in Finder Preferences and uncheck "Recent Tags" at the bottom of the window.
