After the addition of iMessages to iOS 5, it has long been rumored that an iMessages integration for the Mac was inevitable. In February 2012, Apple announced Messages for Mac as an update for OS X Mountain Lion (which will be released late summer 2012). But in the meantime, Mac users can get a preview of what it will be like by downloading Messages Beta. It's a free download that requires users to have at least OS X Lion 10.7.3 installed on their Mac.
UPDATE: Users of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and later have the Messages app preinstalled with OS X. Open the Messages app and go to Messages > Preferences (command+comma) to add your Apple ID and receive iMessages on your Mac.
