Answer:
If you are getting error -8084 one of the files you are copying must be corrupt. Try copying the files in small chunks to narrow down to the problematic file. It might also help to go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > Erase Free Space. In general, it's a good idea to do this every few months.
