What Is iTunesHelper?

Question:

There is an application called iTunesHelper in my Login Items. What does it do and can I disable it?

Answer:

iTunesHelper is a background application that loads during startup in OS X. It simply checks to see if an iPod, iPhone, or iPad has been connected. If a device is detected, it will automatically launch iTunes.

You can disable iTunesHelper from launching during startup by unchecking its box in Login Items in the Users & Groups panel of System Preferences.
