Why Is My Trackpad Jumpy Or Sticking?

Question:

Why is my cursor jumping around when I touch my trackpad?

Answer:

There are several possible reasons that your trackpad could be jumping or behaving in an unstable manner. Please run through the following checklist:

  • Make sure only your finger is touching the trackpad - not your wrist or another body part.
  • Wipe off the trackpad with a dry cloth in case it has been collecting sweat or moisture. If this seems to be the problem, you can buy a Teflon applique to put over the trackpad. It will prevent moisture from collecting on the trackpad.
  • Avoid using hand lotion before using your trackpad.
  • Check to make sure no jewelry - watches, bracelets, etc. - is coming into contact with the trackpad.

If you are using a non-Apple power adapter, there is a slight chance it can cause problems for your trackpad. To test for this issue, unplug the power supply and use the trackpad while running off your battery. If the problem persists, it's not related to the power supply.
