Why Can't I See My External Hard Drive Icon On My Desktop?

I just got a new Mac and I can't see my external hard drive on my desktop like I'm used to seeing. How do I get it back?

Answer:
If your external hard drive icon is not appearing on your desktop you can easily retrieve via the Finder Preferences. Click on your desktop or the Finder icon in your dock to bring the Finder to the front of your screen. Go to Finder > Preferences (Command + ,) in the menu bar and select the General tab. There will be a list of items eligible for display on your desktop - hard disks, external disks, CDs/DVDs/iPods, and connected servers. Select external disks and then close the window. Your external hard drive icon should be back on your desktop.
