Why Does My MacBook Get So Hot?

Question:

It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes my MacBook gets super hot. Is there a reason? What can I do?

Answer:

It's certainly not a universal problem. However, occasionally you may find that your MacBook or MacBook Pro is too hot.

Based on our survey of Mac users, most laptops don't overheat, especially proportional to PCs. However, if your computer is overheating, there are a couple of things you can do.

First, as with all computers, MacBooks and MacBook Pros are designed to be placed on a flat surface, allowing for maximum airflow. As your computer works harder, it gets hotter, and if it's on your lap you may find that the heat levels increase. Realistically, that may not happen for a lot of users. If that's the case, then at least try reducing the workload of your computer, since that might be a reason it is overheating. Close a few applications and see if it helps.

Second, there are utilities you can use to experiment. Some users recommend smcFanControl for calibrating your Mac's fan. Though this is more advanced (and hopefully not necessary), it may be a good resource for Mac users suffering an overheating computer.
